“Self-care” is a popular term, but what exactly does it mean and why is it important? Often it encompasses nearly anything positive a person does to either care for themselves, to bring themselves joy, or for relaxation. Self-care can be a treat. Self-care can be prioritizing actions to benefit physical or mental health. It can be simple or it can be luxurious. The things that empower a person to feel their best, mentally and physically, and to realize their own self-worth can be put in the category of self-care.

This past weekend, The Woodlands hosted our DIVA Retreat Weekend on campus. The purpose of the DIVA weekend is to promote empowerment, self-care, and the diversity of beauty. Ta’lor Pinkston, MSW founder of LADYHOOD journey, LLC, served as the emcee for the runway show during DIVA weekend. She shared her views on self-care: “Self-care is taking care of yourself spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally. It’s about prioritizing your health and wellness of your mind, body and soul.”

We asked Woodlands’ DIVAs what they are inspired to add to their self-care routine following the retreat:

“Reading more books before going to bed.” – Andrea

“Cleaning.” – Rosalind

“I am going to do more things that I enjoy.” – Stephanie

We also asked the participants what they loved about themselves:

“So that I feel good and have confidence.” – Kelsey

“My smile.” – Veronica

Each person deserves to prioritize the things that enable them to be the healthiest and happiest version of themselves they can be. Although DIVA Weekend is for girls and young women, self-care is important for everyone. Leave a comment on The Woodlands Facebook page with one important part of your self-care routine, and keep an eye out for our Macho Man Weekend Retreat in September!
